What Is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate Marketing is a revenue sharing venture between a website owner and an online merchant. The website owner will place advertisements on his websites to either help sell the merchant's products or to send potential customers to the merchant's website, all in exchange for a share of the profits.
So you want to make money on the Internet, but you don't have a product to sell? Fortunately, you can succeed in independent Web publishing by selling products through affiliate marketing. This targeted approach allows you to sell products for other businesses and earn money online.

How to Succeed in Affiliate Marketing
1. Choose a Niche Market
Before you begin, it is important to choose a niche market of products, services, and information that you will provide. Do not try to be everything to everyone. Instead, choose a topic area and focus your attention on becoming the top consumer resource for information for your niche.
2. Choose the Best Affiliate Programs
Do not simply sign up for the first affiliate programs to catch your eye. Spend some time researching the available affiliate programs. Create a list of affiliate programs that offer products relevant to your website. List the pros and cons associated with each, including commission rate, payment guidelines, and linking options. It may take some time to find the best affiliate program for you, but this extra work will pay off in the long run in better site traffic and increased sales.
3. Create Great Content
Becoming a consumer resource is one of the best ways to succeed in affiliate marketing. How can you establish a credible and useful website? By creating content that your readers want and need, you will establish an audience that is interested in what you have to say and what your have to sell. Some great ideas for affiliate content include product reviews, gift guides and other consumer advice.
4. Track Your Progress
Once you have established your affiliate marketing site, it is absolutely vital to keep track of your sales success. Some affiliate programs offer detailed reports of site traffic and sales, which can be especially beneficial. Always keep track of which items are selling and which are not. By using this information to plan future content, marketing tactics, and product choices, you will be able to build an affiliate marketing site that will be successful for years to come.
Why Affiliate Marketing Can Work Well on Blogs :
Affiliate marketing isn’t the only way to make money from blogs and it won’t suit every blog/blogger (more on this below) but there are a few reasons why it can be profitable in our medium. Perhaps the biggest of these reasons is that affiliate marketing seems to work best when there’s a relationship with trust between the publisher and their readership.
I’ve found that as this trust deepens that readers are more likely to follow the recommendations that a blogger makes.
Of course this can also be a negative with affiliate marketing – promote the wrong product and trust can be broken (more on this below).
Affiliate Marketing – Easy Money?
While affiliate marketing can be incredibly lucrative it is important to know that affiliate marketing is not easy money. Most people who try it make very little as it relies upon numerous factors including:
· traffic (high traffic helps a lot)
· finding relevant products
· finding quality products
· building trust with your readers
· having a readership who is in a ‘buying mood’
· you being able to write good sales copy (and more)
There’s also some risk associated with affiliate marketing in that if you push too hard or promote products of a low quality you can actually burn readers and hurt your reputation and brand.
It’s also worth noting that affiliate marketing doesn’t work on all blogs. Some blogs are on topics where it is hard to find products to promote – other blogs attract audiences who are not in a buying frame of mind and for other blogs it just doesn’t fit with the blogger’s style or approach.
Tomorrow I want to continue the focus upon affiliate marketing with another post – this one on how to find affiliate products to promote.
What To Do After Joining Your First Affiliate Program :
We often hear about the thousands of affiliates that sign up for programs only to never actually set up a website, generate traffic or income. Many surveys have shown there are a variety of factors for this trend. There is a portion of affiliates that sign up just to see what the program has to offer; often they could be turned into active affiliates with a simple phone call or e-mail. There will inevitably be potential affiliates that simply aren't attracted to the product or commission structure. Unfortunately more often than not, many potential affiliates don't have a clear direction of what to do after they sign up.
Signing up is just one step in a series of steps to become a serious online marketer. It is important to emulate what other affiliate marketers have done to be successful.
Domain Strategy
Often people purchase domain names that they like or something that helps them create a brand around a concept they personally feel is worthy. Unfortunately obscure terms may not get searched for very often and many search engines look at your domain as another powerful indicator to your market and product. Pick a solid domain name that can offer you great keyword placement AND branding. To do this find out what the most popular searches are for your industry and then search for domains that feature those words, with dashes if available.
Program Resources
Often affiliates do not know what the program has to offer before signing up. Many programs have resources built to help their affiliates succeed. This comes in the form of feeds, content, special product info and graphics. After you sign up contact your affiliate manager or look inside your affiliate admin area to find out if anything is provided. Often affiliate program manager's are happy to help affiliates with special requirements or at least give them guidance.
Hosting Review
Finding a good hosting provider for your website can be an overwhelming task. There are millions of providers who all seem to offer the same services for different pricing. Not all hosting providers are created equal. When evaluating a provider look at the following important things:
· Uptime Guarantee
· Quick Set-Up
· 24/7 Technical Support
· Types of Companies they Service
· Easy Admin of E-Mail and Databases
Once you gather information for these areas, it will be clear to see who really is offering the best service for the price.
Website Design
HTML might look like a foreign language when you first see it, but you will soon find out that it's very simple and anyone can grasp it. Buy a book on basic HTML and purchase html editor software like Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia Dreamweaver. This will allow you to build pages in a simple environment similar to Word. If you would like to produce better graphics or manipulate photos purchase Adobe Photoshop. Design templates are also available for a reasonable fee and you can modify them for your website. Keep in mind that templates are often sold over and over again, so be careful not to pick a design that is used often in your industry or get exclusive rights to the graphics. The key to good affiliate web design is building in areas to update your content often, so you will need to get familiar with web technology to truly be a successful affiliate.
5 Proven Strategies To Maximize Your Earnings
Affiliate marketing is a great way to benefit both businesses and affiliate marketers. The programs allow business to reach a wider base of customers and provide a valuable source of online income for individual marketers. If you want to become a successful affiliate, the following five strategies can also help you improve your chances of success
1. Choose a Niche Market
Successful affiliates understand the importance of niche markets. Too many affiliate marketers focus on the same products, offering anything and everything they can. Research has demonstrated the customers actually buy more when they are offered fewer choices. The key to succeeding in affiliate marketing is to choose a specific niche market and then aggressively targeting this area. Consolidate your efforts by focusing your energy on promoting and selling a specific product or service.
2. Focus on Search Engine Marketing
Once you've chosen your niche, you will need to effectively advertise and promote your affiliate business. Search engine marketing is one of the most effective ways to draw in customers to your website. Search engine marketing, often referred to as SEM, involves using search engines to advertise your product or service. This can be achieved by optimizing web pages to produce organic results through top listings in the major search engines. Another option is to try and advertising program such as Google AdWords or Overture to purchase targeted ads on related websites.
3. Know Your Audience
The key to becoming a successful affiliate is to know the audience you are targeting. Pay attention to your website metrics reports to discover where your viewers are coming from, what they are searching for, and the products they are most interested in. Also take note of comments and feedback you receive from site visitors. This information can help you determine the direction of future sales items, website content, and promotional strategies.
Once you know a bit about your audience, it is important to invest some energy into becoming a resource for these visitors. Create content that appeals to your readers. This might include informational articles, interactive content, quizzes, polls, and forums. These resources allow you to create a connection with viewers and establish your credibility as a valued online merchant.
4. Diversify Your Affiliate Strategy
When it comes to affiliate marketing, the old saying holds true: Never place all of your eggs in one basket. The ever-changing online marketplace can lead to dramatic shifts in monthly sales or website traffic. You can protect yourself from this uncertainty by selling products from several different businesses. When problems arise, such as problems with affiliate links or a failure to pay commissions, you will still have the income from your other affiliate programs to fall back on.
5. Experiment with Promotional Strategies
Never be afraid to try new techniques when promoting your affiliate business. If you have been focusing most of your effort on search engine marketing, consider spending some time on other methods, such as e-mail marketing, weekly newsletters, or cross-linking campaigns. Successful affiliates are able to adapt quickly and learn from other thriving businesses. By using these five strategies and keeping your eye out for new techniques, you will be on your way to becoming a successful affiliate.
Tips For New Affiliate Marketers
When first starting out affiliating, like many others, I made numerous amounts of small mistakes that ended up setting me back. In this article I will share some tips for beginners that will help you save time and overall make you more successful.
The first area I made mistakes in was designing my websites without Google in mind. By this I mean that I did not use any Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques when I first created my sites. This caused a lot of problems and lead to a lot of time being spent fixing them later on. Here are some basic tips I could have used from the start:
1. Use keywords that you are targeting in your Page title, Alt tags and Meta keywords. Make sure you are not over doing it and make sure it is user friendly.
2. Use hyphens when creating subpages for your site. For example instead of domain.com/insidepage or domain.com/inside_page, it is more SEO and user friendly using domain.com/inside-page
3. Interlink your pages when you are relating to a page within your site. Linking from one page to another page within your site when appropriate will add value to your pages.
SEO techniques are a very important part of affiliate marketing. These are just basic tips and I suggest studying more about SEO to help your site show up in Google and other search engines.
The second mistake I was making was with a different part of my web design. When creating my websites I did not have the visitor in mind. My sites were full of banners and low on actual content - putting it straight forward, they were ugly and not informative for the visitor. When creating your pages ask yourself - if you were a visitor at this site would you stay and read on or leave immediately?
Many beginner affiliate marketers tend to put together "spammy" looking sites that are not attractive to the visitors. You need to make sure you don't overdue your site with flashy banners and cheesy sales pitches. Instead focus on things that visitors will find informative such as quality content and reviews. You want your visitors to be able to trust your site and believe the product you are promoting is right for them.
The last mistake I made when entering the affiliate marketing business was taking too long to make contacts and friends within the business. Networking is one of the key ingredients to becoming a successful affiliate marketer. You would be surprised how much experienced affiliates are willing to help out beginners.
Getting to know other people in the business can help you in many ways. Other affiliates can be useful in giving you tips, different outlooks on things, or bouncing ideas off of for some advice. Networking is also a great way to build links towards your site, as giving out links to friends will also get some back your way. Personally, getting to know other affiliate marketers and being able to talk to them through instant messages, Skype, or e-mails has helped me become more successful and made my time on the job a lot more fun.
By following these tips, that unfortunately a lot of beginners don't have the knowledge of, you will be saving yourself a lot of quality time and will help you lead yourself to become a more successful affiliate marketer.
